MUSIK INDONESIA

Enhance the cultural aspect of your Indonesian LOTE or Studies of Asia programs by adding our fun, easy to learn music and dance sessions, where all children are involved. All our workshops are equally appropriate to add that ‘special component’ to any school music program or simply as an exciting, completely ‘hands on’ incursion.

Workshop 1: “Fun with Angklung”

Many schools have angklung and need more ideas as to what to do with them! These west Javanese, bamboo instruments are easy to play, can involve a large group of students and success is immediate. Students enjoy becoming adept at playing several songs in one short session.
*** This includes a second workshop making Udeng headgear. Suitable Years 3 – 6.

Workshop 2: “Sumatran Tambourine Dance”

Unlike other traditional dances, this one is performed sitting down! It is a Sumatran performance to give thanks for a good rice harvest. After this workshop you can buy your own tambourines, paint and lacquer them, attach ribbons, and you have a vibrant, colourful and impressive performance item.
*** This includes a second workshop making traditional Sumatran headgear.
Suitable Years 2 – 6. (Video available for purchase).

Workshop 3: “The Kecak”

This is a simplified version of the monkey Dance from Bali.
The Kecak is a spectacular dance, usually performed at night, surrounding a bonfire.
It is probably the best known of the many Balinese dances, where the dancers move in unison, creating a spectacular choreographic performance. Either hands stretched out, pulled in, rested on the shoulder of the next person, or waists gyrated left and right.
The Kecak is also unusual in that, unlike all other Balinese dances, it does not have a gamelan accompaniment. Instead the background is provided by a chanting ‘choir’ who provide the “cak – cak – cak – cak” noise of the monkeys.
*** This includes a second workshop making Monkey Masks. Suitable Prep – 6.

Workshop 4: “Waterfall Dance”

This dance originates from Aceh in Sumatra, and is also performed sitting down.
Children use floating fabric and arm movements to create the illusion of a waterfall.
*** This includes a second workshop making headgear. Suitable Years 3 – 6.

Workshop 5: “Welcome Dance”

This is a good ‘welcome to our performance’ dance. As a workshop on its own, only suitable for Preps and Year 1’s, but can also be taught in conjunction with one of the other dances.
