ANGKLUNG

The Angklung is a musical instrument special to Indonesia, specifically, West Java.
They are musical instruments which do not use any metal or nails whatsoever - made wholly of bamboo, from the making of the Angklung to its stand. For assembling the musical instrument, bamboo strings are used, which have long been used by rural people for tying up buffaloes, building houses and pulling carts. The most important thing is that the strings do not influence or change the Angklung's note.

The Angklung is made in various sizes, the small ones are household ornaments, medium size usually used for Orchestras and the largest ones are about 1.5 metres high and may be many years old, often an eirloom. Sets of Angklung are used by the old to accompany performances of pencak silat self-defence,comedians and satires. Although the Angklung has its own specific tone, being bamboo, it is made to fit the international scale. An orchestra may have only one octave, but a complete set comprises 85 Angklungs. In addition, the set may be made larger for mass performance comprising thousands of Angklung.

**** Musik Indonesia workshops include several sets of melody angklung, plus chordal angklung (almost unknown in Australia) which add a very special quality to the overall sound. We play some Indonesian music, but mainly Western music (like the children play in Bandung!).

We can cater for groups of up to 30 children per session with everyone playing!!
Success is immediate!
Sessions - 45 – 60 minutes.

During 2002 I imported 4 sets of chordal angklung, as the schools I have been to just love them!
They were purchased by Thomas Mitchell P.S., Wesley College, Elwood P.S. and Beechworth P.S.
